This documentary tells the true story of the teenage dancers from Victoria, Texas who took the stage and changed their world. From church talent shows to tours across the United States and Mexico, their performances created a 65-year legacy that inspired generations of dancers across Texas.
They called themselves Ballet Folklorico Cuicuilco.
The story focuses on the evolution of the first Ballet Folklorico group in Victoria from 1960 to 1972. Inspired by an Italian-American priest who led their church’s Catholic Youth Organization, these teens were encouraged to celebrate their Mexican heritage through a variety of local stage performances. After attending a production of Ballet Folklorico de Mexico with their dance instructor, the teenagers decided that this was the type of performance they wanted to share with audiences. Guided by instructors who trained at Amalia Hernandez’s school of dance, they turned their desire for dance into becoming an in-demand professional dance group. These teenage dancers committed to something bigger than themselves, saw value in what they were doing, and were actually celebrated for it.
The film traces their history from putting on local talent shows in Victoria to performing at the Million Dollar Theater in Los Angeles, touring the East Coast, and traveling to Mexico. It features in-depth interviews with many of the people who were part of it all, including dancers, instructors, and members of the stage crew. And it includes archival photos from throughout this time period showing stage performances, fantastic costumes, behind-the-scenes candids, and more. The tradition of dancing Ballet Folklorico in Victoria, Texas has gone through different names and structures, but its foundational roots lead right back to Ballet Folklorico Cuicuilco!
Following several years of production that has included filming interviews, researching news articles, and collecting photos and memorabilia, this documentary is finally nearing completion. With only a few more interviews to be completed and a collection of photos to be digitized, post-production is already in progress. While there is still a lot of work to be done in these final weeks, the film is expected to be completed by October.
A special screening to debut Cuicuilco to the world has already been scheduled for November 5, 2026 at the Leo J. Welder Center for the Preforming Arts. Come celebrate a piece of Victoria history at this one–night-only event with the people who lived it as members of Cuicuilco will be attending the screening.
